Choosing a floor and meeting latest safety regulation for maritime floor coverings

Safety at sea has been maintained and improved over the years by the systematic introduction of new materials, construction methods, carefully formulated regulations and improved testing procedures.

Under the IMO's International Convention for Safety at Sea, Fire Test Procedures (FTP Code) two main levels of compliance for any product installed in ships are allowed - Part 5, relating to flammability or full IMO compliance both parts 2 and 5 of the FTP code - which covers not only flammability but also smoke emission and toxicity.

Regulations introduced and monitored by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) have been instrumental in improving the safety of crews, passengers and the ships themselves

Accepting without question that a product meets the latest IMO safety standards is not good enough; extreme vigilance is required to ensure absolute compliance of products fitted on board ships.

For intercity vehicles or coaches we recommend that you use Meta, which comes in a wide range of plain colours and Chroma which comes in a wide range of multi-chip colours:

For specialist urban vehicles e.g. emergency we recommend that you use Meta, which comes in a wide range of plain colours and Chroma which comes in a wide range of multi-chip colours:

For underground applications we recommend that you use Altro Transflor Tungsten or MET 20 depending on specification. Altro Transflor Tungsten is available in 6 colours and Altro Transflor MET 20 comes in a range of plain and multi-chip colours.

For surface and overground rolling stock we recommend that you use Altro Transflor Tungsten, which comes in a range of 6 colours, Altro Transflor Meta, which comes in a wide range of plain colours, Altro Transflor Chroma which comes in a wide range of multi-chip colours and Altro Transflor MET 20 which comes in a wide range of plain and multi-chip colours:

A large number of maritime nations that now recognise and uphold IMO and MED regulations. Since the United States under the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) recently adopted the Marine Equipment Directive, hitherto applying only to those ships registered in countries within the EU, some 80 per cent of the world fleet now recognises the MED and adopts the FTP Code.

Products with Part 5 only approval tend to be required in areas of limited passenger traffic or low risk, whereas full IMO compliance (Part 5 and 2) is essential for main passenger areas, such as corridors, enclosed stairways and other high-risk locations. Shipowners, ship operators and shipbuilders all have a 'duty of care' where the safety of passengers and crew is concerned.
