PVC has had a bad press in some countries, and we have
made it our business to investigate all such claims.
We are satisfied that PVC is safe, and that it has environmental
advantages relative to alternative products:
long-lived means less material and manufacturing energy light weight means lower fuel consumption= low-maintenance means less cleaning agents durable and fire retardant means safer transport More than 15 life-cycle analyses have been made of PVC and products in Europe and all confirm that PVC compares favourably with other plastics. |
Raw materials PVC is made by combining chlorine (produced by electrolysis of salt water) and ethylene (a by-product of natural gas) to form vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). VCMs are locked into the structure of Altro Transflor products and cannot escape in normal use. Studies in Europe and the USA have shown PVC manufacture to produce insignificant dioxin emission. Additives Altro Transflor does not contain heavy metal stabilisers; uses phosphate rather than phthalate placticisers for flexibility; approved colour pigments for appearance, and silicon carbide, aluminium oxide and quartz chip for their durability and non-slip characteristics. |
Manufacturing
process European PVC producers Charter for the Production of VCM and PVC exceeds EU legal requirements. Altro Transflor has adopted fail-safe manufacturing, environmental and quality protocols, which fully meet ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001. Recycling Altro Transflor products can be recycled in the UK alone there are over 30 companies who specialise in PVC recycling. If some product does end up as waste PVC in from construction accounts for 0.3% of global waste it can be safely disposed of by proper incineration, or in landfill, where it remains inert. |
